America’s Curious Kinks: Which ones have you tried?

Top 10 Most Searched Kinks

Over recent decades, American adults have grown much more comfortable discussing desires that were once considered taboo. Ysos’s research into the most searched for kinks paints a picture of the nation’s evolving sexual trends and interests.

Masochism is one of the most commonly searched kinks, with nearly 987,430 recorded searches. Despite its popularity, interest in the kink has dropped by 37%. Similarly, sadism, which saw 296,070 searches, represents a decline of 38%, perhaps reflecting a changing curiosity around dominant-submissive dynamics.

Other classic kinks, such as voyeurism and exhibitionism, have also seen a decrease in interest as people begin to explore new kinks and experiences. Voyeurism, which had 225,480 searches, dropped by 51%, while gagging fell by 54%. Exhibitionism, though still searched for 155,420 times, saw only a 6% decline, perhaps suggesting that the thrill of public or semi-public displays of sexuality still remains appealing to many.

Fascinatingly, kinks, once regarded as niches, have seen a large increase in searches. For instance, financial domination (FInDom) has seen a 25% surge in searches, reaching 91,060. This kink, which centers on consensual financial control and submission, has had more visibility online over recent years, leading to increased curiosity.

Bondage and impact play are among the most consistently searched-for kinks, with 143,140 and 94,740 searches, respectively. These practices emphasize trust, power exchange, and controlled stimulation, making them key practices in BDSM dynamics. Edge play, known for pushing psychological boundaries, saw 88,230 searches, dropping only 3%, demonstrating a steady level of interest.

According to psychologist and sex and relationships adviser Barbara Santini, these shifting trends demonstrate how personal and cultural attitudes towards desire are evolving. “Exploring kinks can uniquely enhance communication, trust, and self-awareness in relationships. When approached with curiosity and mutual consent, kinks can deepen intimacy and foster self-discovery”, she explains.

Why Are People More Open About Kinks Today?

A range of factors support greater acceptance and interest in kinks, moving them from the fringes into the mainstream. Shows like Euphoria and Sex Education, along with popular novels and films such as Fifty Shades of Grey, have all made discussions about BDSM and power dynamics more commonplace.

Mainstream media, social media, and incredibly popular podcasts like Call Her Daddy and The Sexuality Show have all helped to normalize open conversations about desires and kinks. Music and pop culture have also adopted some of the language of kinks, breaking down stigma and fostering greater curiosity.

These shifts have all helped more people feel comfortable exploring non-conventional dating, polyamorous relationships, and swinging without shame or fear of judgment.

Safe and Consensual Exploration

Barbara Santini emphasizes the importance of safety, consent, and good communication when exploring kinks. “Consent, negotiation, and safe words create a foundation of trust,” she says. “Kink exploration can serve as a mirror, revealing individual and relational needs, whether that be control, surrender, emotional intimacy, or self-expression.”

For anyone interested in diving into new kinks, it’s essential to communicate openly with partners about their desires and boundaries. Safe words can be used to establish clear consent before engaging in different practices and to better manage the experience. It’s also important to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of all parties post-play.

As US society continues to embrace more open conversations around sexuality, curiosity about kinks is only expected to grow. Whether you’re an experienced kinkster or you’re just starting to explore, the key is always to do so safely and consensually.
